چکیده

We have used WFPC2 V RI observations to calculate the distances to three nearby galaxies, NGC 4214, UGC 685, and UGC 5456 using the tip of the red giant branch method. Our values for NGC 4214 (2.94 ± 0.18 Mpc) and UGC 685 (4.79 ± 0.30 Mpc) are the most precise measurementes of the distances to these objects ever made. For UGC 5456 the data do not allow us to reach a decisive conclusion since there are two possible solutions, one leading towards a short distance around 3.8 Mpc and another one towards a long distance of 5.6 Mpc or more. Subject headings: galaxies: distances and redshift — galaxies: individual (NGC 4214, UGC 685, UGC 5456) — galaxies: irregular — galaxies: stellar content

New distances of unresolved dwarf elliptical galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group ⋆

We present Surface Brightness Fluctuation distances of nine early-type dwarf galaxies and the S0 galaxy NGC 4150 in the Local Volume based on deep Band R-band CCD images obtained with the 2.56 metre Nordic Optical Telescope. Typically, six stellar fields at various galactocentric distances have been chosen for each galaxy as appropriately free of foreground stars and other contaminants, and Fou...

X iv : a st ro - p h / 01 11 30 7 v 1 1 5 N ov 2 00 1 HST observations of the cometary blue compact dwarf galaxy UGC 4483 : a relatively young galaxy ?

We present V and I photometry of the resolved stars in the cometary blue compact dwarf galaxy UGC 4483 using Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) images. The resulting I vs. (V − I) color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches limiting magnitudes V = 27.5 mag and I = 26.5 mag for photometric errors less than 0.2 mag. It reveals not only a young stellar population of blue main-s...

The Dwarf Irregular Galaxy UGC 7636 Exposed: Stripping at Work in the Virgo Cluster.

We present the results of optical spectroscopy of a newly discovered H ii region residing in the H i gas cloud located between the dwarf irregular galaxy UGC 7636 and the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 in the Virgo Cluster. By comparing UGC 7636 with dwarf irregular galaxies in the field, we show that the H i cloud must have originated from UGC 7636 because (1) the oxygen abundance of the clo...

The Massive Stellar Population in a Nearby Massive Low Surface Brightness Galaxy

We have observed the closest known large, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy, UGC 2302, with HST using WFPC2 and the F555W and F814W filters. UGC 2302 is a typical large LSB galaxy, and thus represents a good choice for detailed stellar population studies. Large LSBs represent an extreme star formation environment, both locally within their disks, and on a larger scale, often residing in under...

Co Detection and Millimeter Continuum Emission from Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We present BIMA and IRAM CO (1–0) observations of seven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including three large spiral galaxies with faint disks but prominent bulges and four relatively small LSB galaxies with irregular disks. The giant LSB galaxies are UGC 5709, UGC 6614, and F568-6 (Malin 2). The smaller LSB galaxies are NGC 5585, UGC 4115, UGC 5209, and F583-1. The galaxies were selecte...
